Synopsis

Simple text describes allergies, their effects, and discusses some of the most common allergens.

Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature

In a way, it was comforting to learn that one in five people suffer from allergies. Having that problem myself, it was interesting to learn that some of us have food allergies, allergies to bee stings—which can be truly dangerous—and allergies due to pollen which is plentiful in springtime. There is often not a cure. You can take medication and, of course, work hard to avoid exposure to known allergens, but the good news is that sometimes you can outgrow an allergy. This text, like others in the "Rookie Read-About Health" series, gives a succinct explanation of allergies that kids can understand and the text is well supported with kid-friendly photographs. Also, there is a picture glossary entitled "Words You Know," an index, and a brief blurb about the author. 2003, Children's Press/Scholastic, Ages 4 to 7.
