Overview

Allergens are all around us: in the air, on our pets, and in our food. According to USA TODAY, the Nation's No. 1 Newspaper, accidental exposure to food allergens leads to fifty thousand emergency room visits and causes at least 150 deaths in the United States each year. Some organizations estimate that allergies and asthma affect one in five Americans, and many people suffer from allergies their entire lives. There is no cure for allergies, but you can take steps to prevent a reaction and to control symptoms. This book provides case studies of people living with allergies and describes the causes, symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments of common allergies. You'll learn that, with the proper precautions, allergies and asthma do not have to slow you down.

Outlines various allergies, the reactions they can cause, and preventative measures that can be taken to avoid them.

School Library Journal

Gr 5-8-A useful and thorough overview of allergies, especially as related to teens. Moragne first explains the physical process of an allergic reaction, and then offers a general look at diagnosis and treatment. Subsequent chapters deal with specific types of allergies-allergic rhinitis; skin, food, drug, and insect allergies; and asthma. Each of these chapters is prefaced by a case history of a young person suffering from the particular diagnosis. The final chapter deals with effective ways to live with allergies and the social stigmas that may accompany them. Bullets and black-and-white photos, many of which are of teens, break up the text. The author writes clearly and calmly about potentially life-threatening conditions. A good update on an important topic.-Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
