Synopsis

Examines the people, educational system, scientific and artistic discoveries, social structure, shopping, festivals, and famous artists of Rome in 143 A.D.

School Library Journal

Gr 4-6 In four brief chapters, Nardo covers family life and homes; work, workers, and education; public baths; and worship. Throughout, he examines the different roles played by men and women, adults and children, slaves and free men, and rich and poor. There's nothing new here, but the author presents his information clearly without fictionalizing, and offers some first-person accounts by period writers. The illustrations are mostly color reproductions of Roman mosaics and medieval etchings and wood prints, but there are a few quality color photographs as well. The layout is clear and logical. An informative introduction that will have some appeal for reluctant readers. -Lynda S. Poling, Long Beach Public Library, CA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
