Synopsis

Once lords of the Plains, the Apaches -- and their homelands -- stretched from northern Mexico through much of the U.S. Southwest. Today, most Apaches live in Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. When the Spanish, then the Mexicans, and finally the Americans took over Apache buffalo-hunting lands and killed the massive buffalo herds on which many Indians depended, the Apaches became masterful raiders, swooping down on cattle ranches to steal livestock. Still famous for their riding abilities today, the Apaches are also working to hand down other features of their fascinating culture. After years of U.S. government domination, the Apaches are taking their government and their economy into their own hands. This book explores a powerful nation's past and present, describing the Apaches' home life, arts, culture, and beliefs.

Children's Literature

Historians believe these Native American people, the Apaches, migrated from the northern parts of North America as early as A.D. 800 or 900. Their homeland included a massive area of what we know today as the southwest United States and northern Mexico, but today they live primarily in New Mexico, Arizona and Oklahoma. The name Apache means "enemy" and originates from a Zuni Pueblo Indian word. These facts but scratch the surface of the rich details concerning this tribe! The bulk of the book is contained in four chapters: Origins, History, Traditional Way of Life and Today. A substantial time line and glossary are located at the end along with a page listing resources for further research (Web sites, videos and books). Interestingly, another page near the end suggests various activities, such as building a teepee or writing a paragraph about a particular topic. Spectacular historical and contemporary photographs (both black-and-white and color), drawings, maps and other images appear on each page. The text reads easily but is nicely detailed. An overall great book, this is part of the "Native American Peoples" series that also includes the titles Cherokee, Seminole and Mohawk. 2003, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Carolan
