Children's Literature

As part of the "Raintree Biographies" series, we meet Sacagawea, the young Shoshone Indian who traveled the Great Plains with her tribe until being kidnapped by another tribe at age 12. She came to play an important role in American history as a guide to Captain Meriwether Lewis and Captain William Clark on their journey across the northwest region of the United States. We get to know her by way of an introduction to other people in her life as well as through a look at some of the American paintings that depicted the setting, various Indian tribes, and, of course, Lewis and Clark. Contemporary photographs give a further sense of life on the Plains and the reverence that was shown to Sacagawea for her contributions to the Lewis and Clark expedition. Sidebars offer additional history of the time. This 32-page book includes a timeline, glossary, further reading material and index and is available in library-bound version. 2003, Raintree-Steck Vaughn,
