Synopsis
A discussion of the history, culture, and contemporary life of the Sioux Indians.
Children's Literature
When one contemplates this Native American tribe, images of the Black Hills, Wounded Knee and Crazy Horse may come to mind. All of these are directly related to the Sioux people but there is so much more! Horses acquired from other tribes in the early 1700s changed their lives tremendously. Buffalo provided for almost of their needs. In addition to the straightforward text contained in the four chapters (titled Origins, History, Traditional way of Life and Today) there are brown inset boxes detailing certain subjects, such as Lakota Words, Sitting Bull and the Slaughter of the Buffalo Herds. Reservations are examined. A substantial time line and glossary are located at the end along with a page listing resources for further research (Web sites, videos and books). Another page near the end suggests things to do and think about, such as drawing pictures and writing paragraphs about certain subjects. Outstanding photographs, historical and modern-day, are generously placed throughout. This is a valuable research book and would be a welcome addition to an elementary school or home library. It is part of the "Native American Peoples" series that delves into the cultures of the original Americans, including the titles Aztec, Cherokee and Navajo. 2003, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Carolan
