The opportunity to learn and to have a laugh while doing it is one of the goals of the "DK See-Through" series of sturdy books. The question posed on the cover has a die cut hole that shows a square egg and a hen perched on the question mark with a text balloon containing the single word "ouch!" Adults will get it but I am afraid it might take some explaining to kids, but then that is what this book is supposed to do, engage adults and kids and let the young ones glean some interesting facts about shapes. A question is posed and an image with the strange shape is shown, turning the page reveals the correct answer. To illustrate: "Are wheels star-shaped?" A car is shown with star shaped wheels. On the next page the text reads "No, wheels are always round!" and cars with round heels are shown. All of the shapes presented in the book are reprised on the closing pages. The book is spiral bound so the pages can be easily turned and they will also lay flat. An interesting approach to a popular subject. 2003, DK Publishing, Ages 2 to 5.β Marilyn Courtot
