Gr 5-8-Nardo explores this mysterious civilization through the writings of ancient and modern authors, touching upon the various theories about this lost world. He begins with Plato's detailed descriptions in the dialogues, discussing the land, cities, people, and government. Although most Greek writers believed that Atlantis was a figment of Plato's imagination, the Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus and the Greek philosopher Proclus accepted its existence. The works of modern researchers, such as Ignatius Donnelly are also included. Nardo presents a full accounting of the many disputed locations of the continent, which, in addition to the Atlantic Ocean, include Morocco, Tunisia, Europe, Malta, Iran, and Arabia. Although the mystery may never be solved, the story of Atlantis will continue to be a source of fascination. The author uses many quotes and sidebars, and definitions of unfamiliar words are provided in the narrative.
