Children's Literature
The text of this easy-to-read overview certainly makes all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) sound exciting: "ATVs open up the wilderness for adventure and fun!" The recreational appeal and practical functions of ATVs are discussed, as is the history of the vehicle. The text emphasizes the appeal of ATVs for adults and kids, and the illustrations depict children riding with adults and on their own smaller vehicles. Safety concerns of the sport are addressed extensively, with attention paid to the importance of helmets and other protective gear. The book lacks an effective conclusion. Instead, it ends abruptly with an overview of an ATV's parts, with helpful labeled photographs. A brief glossary defines highlighted words. Unfortunately, the book lacks an index and other appended materials that might aid young researchers, making this book more appropriate for fans and other casual readers. It's part of the "Sports Machines" series. 2004, The Child's World, Ages 5 to 8.βNorah Piehl
