Overview

This deceptively simple introduction to everyday emotions features close-up paintings of four adorable babies. The multi-racial children range in age from infant to toddler, and each spread shows a child experiencing two contrasting emotions that are linked by cause-and-effect.

The complementary-colored backgrounds and striking patterns will stimulate a babys developing vision.

Author Biography: Phyllis Limbacher Tildes graduated from Rhode Island School of Design and studied art in Rome, Italy. After many years as a graphic designer, she now devotes herself to her first love, writing and illustrating books for children. Phyllis lives in Savannah, Georgia.

School Library Journal

PreS-This board book misses the mark. It features bright, cartoonlike color portraits of four toddlers. The pictures-essentially two views of each child per spread-are labeled with single-word captions for the contrasting emotions depicted. The last spread shows the four children together. They are "sleepy." The faces of the three different little ones deemed "surprised," "happy," and "excited" all wear the same expression. The pictures for "scared" and "brave" show a little boy with a caterpillar-who is afraid of a caterpillar? And is it brave to hold one on your hand? The idea behind this book is beyond a baby's understanding. There are better titles on this subject, such as Baby Faces (DK, 1998).-JoAnn Jonas, Chula Vista Public Library, San Diego, CA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
