Children's Literature

Throughout time birds have fascinated people. Owning a bird as a pet can be a rewarding experience, but it is also a big responsibility. It is important that perspective owners "do their homework" before deciding the type of bird that they can best provide for. This book explores the food, housing, and training that several variety of birds require. Each chapter consists of about four pages and fun "fast facts" are scattered throughout. The African gray parrot, budgerigar, cockatoo, lovebird, macaw, canary, and toucan are just a few of the ten bird species that discussed. There is a colorful half-page photograph of each bird at the beginning of the chapter and a list of Internet sources at the end. The book concludes with an index and a list of sources for additional information. Any reader seeking information on the care and characteristics of birds will certainly appreciate this book. It is part of the "What a Pet!" series. 2003, Twenty-First Century Books/Millbrook Press, Ages 10 up.
