A bird can be a wonderful pet and this selection in the "All About Pets" series uses simple declarative sentences to describe the major characteristics of birds—wings, feathers and a bill. Like all living things they need food and water and a clean place to live. Birds also need toys and space to fly around. The "Words to Know" section contains more information than the book. Full-color pictures appear on the left-hand page and the single sentence text on the right. There is a list of other books and Internet sites for more information as well as an index/word list. Since the back matter is written at a much higher reading and comprehension level than the text, adult assistance will probably be required to effectively access or use these resources. 2001, Pebble Books, $13.25.
