Children's Literature -
While Civil War soldiers certainly experienced some of the most ferocious combat in the history of America, much of their time was spent in camp, drilling, and simply coping with their time in service. In this volume of the six-book "Civil War" series readers are provided insights into some of the behind the scenes elements that shaped the lives of Civil War era soldiers. Subjects such as military music, gambling, letters from home, press coverage, and the emergence of photography are but a few of the topics that various authors address in this encyclopedic book. As is the case with other books in this series, Behind the Fighting is arranged in alphabetical order by topic. In this volume the non-chronological organization is a non-factor as the materials covered are stand alone topics. In addition, the authors of this interesting book include a number of first person observations and quotations in order to underscore the narrative. This mixing of primary source voices with contemporary scholarship results in an enhanced narrative that draws readers into a historical epoch long gone. In this way Behind the Fighting provides readers a solid foundation of understanding of a wide range of subjects that vitally interested Civil War soldiers and students thereof. Reviewer: Greg M.
