Overview
Benjamin Harrison came from a long line of American leaders. His grandfather, William Henry Harrison, was the ninth president of the United States. During the Civil War, he served valiantly as a Union officer and later, became active in the Republican Party. He won a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1881. In 1888 he ran for president, edging out Democrat Grover Cleveland to be elected. During his term, President Harrison helped strengthen the U.S. Navy, backed U.S. business interests, and oversaw the admission of six new western states to the United States. Harrison ran for a second term in 1892, again against Grover Cleveland, but this time he lost the election. He resumed his law practice. Harrison died in 1901.Book Details
