Children's Literature - Joyce Rice

Early football players did not use helmets and pads as players do today. The first games played looked more like soccer than football. Princeton University was the first school to wear uniforms for the game. These and other interesting facts are presented in this book subtitled "secrets, statistics, and little-known facts about football." The author has included hard-to-find information about African-American teams and women's teams. Readers are presented trivia questions throughout the volume, and are taught a little math along the way. Students will enjoy sharing the trivia challenges presented in the text. Math teachers need to be alerted to this book in their efforts to teach across curriculum areas, since it is an excellent volume for upper elementary and middle school sports collections. Classroom teachers will also want to include it in multicultural units. It is a good title to direct toward upper elementary and middle school boys, especially reluctant readers. One of four titles in the "Sports Trivia" series.
