Children's Literature

This thirty-two-page picture book presents us with a few of the world's biggest animals. Explaining that their large size helps these animals to survive in their habitats, animals from varying continents are introduced. Among others, the book discusses the tallest land animal—the giraffe—blue whales, African elephants, and the giant squid. Each animal is given a four-page spread that includes large, clear photographs. Along with some basic information, small textboxes provide interesting facts about each animal. For instance, the giant squid is one and a half times the size of a school bus, with an eyeball the size of a basketball. The extra large photographs (a page and a half for the largest) show wonderful details and help with context clues to show the size of the animals. Limited information means limited use as a source for reports but for readers interested in animals, this will be a big hit. Includes a table of contents, glossary, promised web links on the publisher's website, and an index. Reviewer: Sharon Oliver
