Children's Literature
This thirty-two-page picture book presents us with a few of the world's smallest animals. Explaining that their small size helps these animals to survive in their habitats, animals from varying continents are introduced. Among others, the book discusses the smallest dog, the purse sized Chihuahua; the South American kodkod, the smallest wildcat; and threadsnakes, small enough to curl up on a quarter. Each animal is given a two or four-page spread that includes large, clear photographs. Along with some basic information, small textboxes provide interesting facts about each animal. For instance, scientist only discovered Noble's pygmy frog, less than a half inch in size, because they heard it croaking. The extra large photographs show wonderful details and help with context clues to show the size of the animals. Limited information means limited use as a source for reports but for readers interested in animals, this will be a big hit. Includes a table of contents, glossary, promised web links on the publisher's website, and an index. Reviewer: Sharon Oliver
