Overview

Hoping to alleviate his boredom, Caillou decides to surprise his mother with a new recipe. Hard at work in the kitchen, he becomes covered with flour, and a puddle of honey causes his feet to stick to the floor. His thoughtful gesture is creating messy results! Relevant to real development issues, this delightful adventure illustrates that even the best of intentions can have an occasional downfall.

Children's Literature - Susan Borges

Caillou is back in this heart-warming story young children will identify with because of their own experiences in trying to please a family member. Caillou wants to invent a new recipe for Mommy, so while Mommy is with his baby sister, he goes to the kitchen to get out some ingredients. However, his cooking attempt turns into a big mess when everything spills onto the floor. Mommy tenderly helps clean up, and then later in the day when she has time, she asks Caillou to bake cookies as a surprise for daddy. Children will be delighted with the happy ending and charmed by the detailed, colorful, and expressive illustrations of Caillou and his mom. In addition, the wonderful illustrations will aid readers in full comprehension of the story and the expressions on the faces of Caillou, his mom, and his dad will help young readers understand the message of kindness and helpfulness, rather than punishment and criticism. This is a perfect picture book for the youngest readers who will enjoy it by themselves or with an adult reading partner. Reviewer: Susan Borges
