School Library Journal

Gr 5-8-These titles are well written and substantive without being overly technical. Cancer is thorough and understandable, with down-to-earth explanations of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Down Syndrome emphasizes that although children with the syndrome have certain characteristics, they are all individuals with different personalities, abilities, and health issues. Meningitis addresses all forms of the disease and includes explanations of diagnosis, treatment, and complications. All three books include overviews of symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, and research. Most of the full-color photos are decorative (kids swimming, greatly enlarged images of antibiotic capsules) but a few pictures really pack a punch, such as a Down syndrome child playing a violin and a woman undergoing treatment for breast cancer. An annotated list of Web sites is provided for "Information and Advice." Good, solid introductions.-Christine A. Moesch, City of Tonawanda Public Library, NY Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
