Gr 6 Up This excellent and straightforward discussion of cancer is a revised and updated edition of the Silversteins' 1977 book (Harper). It has the same basic organization, with the addition of an updated bibliography. There has been substantial rewriting, and new information has been added to reflect major discoveries in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. Unfamiliar technical terms are italicized and defined in the text. In addition to discussing current theories of treatment and research, the Silversteins also provide a historical study. This is followed by sections on environmental causes of cancer, including smoking, and sources of help and information for cancer patients and their families. It would make a good addition to library collections, especially in conjunction with Judylaine Fine's Afraid to Ask (Lothrop, 1986), which concentrates more on the emotional trauma experienced by patients and their families.
