Purpose: The author "aims to help the child with cerebral palsy to develop into an adult in whom the effects of the disability are managed so they have the least impact possible on adult function." Given the diverse and often unscientific approaches to the management of cerebral palsy, such an extensive book (1,055 pages) is not only needed but welcome. The author's aims are well met.
Audience: This book is aimed at orthopedic surgeons, both residents and practitioners, who see children.
Features: The book covers virtually every aspect of cerebral palsy, in a depth appropriate to an orthopedic audience. The motor systems and causes of motor dysfunction are treated in 80 pages, rehabilitation technique in 60, surgical techniques in 160, and gait in 130. Detailed chapters are devoted to hip, spine, upper extremity, and lower extremities. Useful flow charts summarize many chapters. Of special utility is the 24-page first chapter, "The Child, the Parent, and the Goal," which provides very useful insights into the psychology and family dynamics that often control treatment. Numerous case studies humanize the text.
