If you think that cheerleaders are not athletes, you are wrong. Cheerleading requires, strength, flexibility and teamwork. It requires practice, training and dedication. It is more than just cheering and pompom waving. This new book, one of the "Sports in Action" series, is an introduction for young people who are interested in cheerleading. It takes them through the basics of the sport including hand motions and stances. It demonstrates warm-up activities and techniques for jumping and shouting. The book also touches on more advanced elements like dancing, acrobatics, and stunts. There are plenty of illustrations, both drawings and photographs, to illustrate the different elements. The author never loses sight of safety, however, and repeats the need for a coach, trainer or spotter to be present during all practices. All teachers need to address standards somehow, this book would be useful for physical education teachers. Students will be drawn to this bright and inviting book. A definite plus in a classroom library. 2003, Crabtree Publishers, Ages 8 to 11.βHeather Mason
