Synopsis

Offers a brief introduction to the history, techniques, equipment, and rules of wrestling, a sport that began thousands of years ago and was part of the first Olympic games.

Heather Mason - Children's Literature

The two wrestlers start in the neutral position. When the whistle blows, one person tries for a tie up, but the other quickly moves into a double-leg takedown. A quick flip leads to a pin and the match is over. This is wrestling. Many kids think of the showbiz of professional wrestling, but this book describes the three types of competitive wrestling: Greco-Roman, freestyle, and folkstyle. The book, one of the "Sports in Action" series, introduces readers to the basic elements of the sport including positions, moves and scoring. It is illustrated with both drawings and photographs of both boys and girls involved in the sport. In the back are an index and glossary. Physical education teachers who are looking for a way to teach the core curriculum without leaving the P.E. requirements behind would find this book particularly useful. Kids interested in sports would find this book fascinating. 2003, Crabtree Publishers, Ages 8 to 11.
