Description:The authors wrote this new medical-surgical textbook on adult health and illness based on experience with students and their expressed need for a text that presents material in a readable format.
Purpose:The authors' intent was to present the material using a thorough and organized approach. Resources are used to assist students with various learning styles.
Audience:It is clearly intended for nursing students and written at a level the students can understand.
Features:Chapters present an overview of a problem, the etiology, physiology and pathophysiology, and treatment and management. Features include dollars and sense (cost of a particular nursing intervention) and uncovering the evidence (research to support the intervention or practice). There are case studies in a nursing care format and concept maps. The only possible problem is the size and weight of the book.
Assessment:This well written and organized book covers the topics thoroughly. It explains aspects of patient care from identifying the cause to a discussion of nursing interventions and treatment. Because of its size, the book would be difficult for students to carry to clinical or to class. This brand new entry into this area should be evaluated based on use by schools of nursing.

About the Author, Rick Daniels

Rick Daniels, RN, Ph.D. obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Oregon Nursing School, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of San Diego and a Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of Texas in Austin. He has taught nursing in associate, baccalaureate and graduate schools, as well as RN degree completion programs. In addition, he has taught many adult health and illness topics at seminars and has presented posters for national organizations (e.g., AORN, NLN Educators Conference). Dr. Daniels administers clinical practicum courses in critical care and perioperative nursing arenas and is currently an associate professor with tenure at Oregon Health & Sciences University, School of Nursing.
