VOYA -
This concise, factual, and informative title tackles the large, often complex subject of compulsive eating and accurately describes the various forms, causes, and treatments available. While dozens of titles are available on bulimia, anorexia, and overeating, all three conditions are compactly covered in this one title. With a basic introduction about the social and psychological aspects of eating, Simpson, an outpatient therapist, clearly explains the differences between the various types of compulsive eating. She wisely discusses the relationship between compulsive overeating and other compulsive behaviors, while stressing that these diseases often begin in adolescence and can be caused by emotional stress. Simpson also addresses possible solutions for those suffering the compulsions. A discussion of available professionals, treatments, and organizations, as well as a chapter on how to help a friend with an eating disorder, are included. A short appendix featuring a recommended amount of food portions looks a bit like a Weight Watchers guide and does not provide enough information for those looking to understand nutrition. These recommendations act as guidelines and nothing more. The hotline and Web site information provide further contacts for information. While other titles might examine these issues with more depth, this easy-to-read title provides a basic understanding of the issues and is an excellent addition to any public or school library.
