Children's Literature
Part of the "World of Recipes" series, this title is valuable for schools and other groups in preparing for ethnic meals and events. It includes easy-to-prepare recipes such as tiramisu from Italy, key lime pie from the United States, flan from Spain, and cool orange granita from Algeria. There is a rather extensive list of countries included. It could be useful for special functions, for ethnic dinners, and for social studies/history classes. The great pictures show what the dessert should look like upon completion. The vocabulary is easy enough for most beginners. In an offset on each dessert layout is "What You Need." "What You Do" is arranged by numbers and steps. There are colors and borders on each page making it pleasing to the eye. In many sections there are helpful hints, such as, melting chocolate for the Chocolate Mousse and "Baking In Water" for the Flan. In addition there is a helpful section in the front that addresses ingredients, kitchen rules, utensils and measuring. Bold print words are defined in the glossary. There is also "Further Information," "Healthy Eating," and an index. This book should certainly be a part of school and public library collections. 2004, Heinemann Library, Ages 10 to 18.βNaomi Butler
