Part of the series "Learning About Money," this title presents the young reader with the ins and outs of earning money. A boy, Sam, is the focal point as the concept of working for money in order to buy what you need or want is explained. Like adults, kids can sell their services or goods. They must set fair prices and change their prices according to demand and competition in order to be successful. They can earn allowances just for being a part of the family or for doing chores. The self-worth of kids is enhanced when they can buy what they want with their own money. Photos of Sam selling lemonade, walking dogs, gathering his old toys for a sale, selling his snow- shoveling services, and painting a bench for his dad show how he ultimately gets to buy a model car. There are some fun facts scattered in the book, and an amazing fact page about a nine-year-old girl whose homemade chocolates ultimately earned millions of dollars. A project page is devoted to how to do a sale of old household items. A table of contents, glossary, references to related books and Internet sites (guided by Fact Hound.com), and an index round out the text. Although it is an introduction to the subject, some of the concepts are rather advanced. It should appeal to the young entrepreneur. 2005, First Facts/Capstone Press, Ages 6 to 10.
