This book is better approached as an introduction to the strong and intelligent character of Eleanor Roosevelt than a source of specific historical information about her actions and accomplishments since it offers a general outline of her life but does not include much detail. There are a lot of photographs and a list of important dates in the former first lady's life in the back of the book, along with a glossary of new vocabulary terms. The text is very reader-friendly with large print and new terms in bold type. Pam Rosenberg, the author, describes Eleanor Roosevelt in highly laudable terms and conveys the fact that she was a philanthropist who poured much of her time, energy and intelligence into the service of others, whether championing the civil rights for minorities or visiting slums during the Depression to better familiarize herself with the hardships of American citizens. Gr 2-3-This introduction covers many of the events in Roosevelt's life, from her privileged, but troubled, childhood to her long career of service and sacrifice for others. Discussion of her youth includes mention of her somewhat insensitive mother, her alcoholic father (alcoholism is one of the words boldfaced and defined in the glossary), and her beloved teacher, Mlle. Souvestre. The book makes it clear that while Roosevelt was married to one of the most famous presidents of the past century, it was her works, from her own heart and hands, that made her a standout First Lady and important figure in U.S. history. However, this audience may not need to be aware of her discovery of love letters that Franklin received from another woman during their marriage, as mentioned in the book. Mrs. Roosevelt's achievements are highlighted in the time line and the "Did You Know" facts complement the text nicely.
