Overview

Technology is constantly changing; what is cutting edge today is obsolete tomorrow. In this ever-evolving environment, educators, researchers and professionals of the discipline need access to the most comprehensive knowledge about the concepts, issues, trends and technologies in this hi-tech field.

The Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology is the first work to map this ever-changing field. It is the most comprehensive, research-based encyclopedia consisting of contributions from over 900 noted researchers in over 50 countries. This five-volume encyclopedia includes more than 550 articles highlighting current concepts, issues and emerging technologies. These articles are enhanced by special attention that is paid to over 5,000 technical and managerial terms. These terms will each have a 5-50 word description that allow the users of this extensive research source to learn the language and terminology of the field. In addition, these volumes offer a thorough reference section with over 11,500 sources of information that can be accessed by scholars, students, and researchers in the field of information science and technology.

These wide-ranging, user-friendly alphabetically organized volumes are an important addition for your library collection.

"As a MIS professor, I am constantly faced with staying abreast of technology changes. The Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology is an exhaustive and convenient method of meeting these needs. I would recommend these volumes to all of my technical and behavioral information technology colleagues."

Library Journal

This massive international reference work-with contributors representing over 50 countries-has been compiled by Khosrow-Pour, the editor in chief of the Information Resources Management Association's Information Resources Management Journal. Like the journal, the encyclopedia focuses more on information technology and the business thereof (e.g., e-commerce) than on library and information science. However, many of the topics, such as data mining, distance learning, knowledge management, and web applications, are pertinent to librarianship. In length and style, the 550-plus entries read more like scholarly essays than encyclopedia articles. Atypically, the entries, as well as the table of contents, are organized across the multiple volumes by title in strict alphabetical order. Although there is a helpful subject-organized table of contents, users still need to go to each of the five volumes to find all the entries on a given topic. The work's global scope is principally an asset, but terms less common in the United States are immediately recognizable (e.g., "SME," which stand for "small to medium enterprise"). The publisher provides complimentary access to the online version "for the life of the edition" to all libraries that purchase this print edition, which certainly provides more value for the already steep price. The set can also be purchased as a NetLibrary ebook. Bottom Line Covering a broader range of topics than the four-volume Encyclopedia of Information Systems (which only offers 220 articles), this set is best suited to academic libraries, particularly information systems and business collections, and library and information science collections. Special libraries and large public libraries may also find it of interest.-Sara Tompson, Univ. of Southern California Lib., Los Angeles Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
