Overview
In the 8 years since the publication of the first edition of Essentials of Anatomic Pathology, great strides have been made in our understanding of diseases and neoplastic processes. Many clinically important new histopathologic entities have been described or more fully defined in virtually every organ. Numerous clinically important diagnostic and prognostic markers have entered routine practice. Genetic testing for the early detection of cancers and the molecular classification of diseases has become increasingly important. This is an age of enlightenment in surgical pathology, and the authors of this new volume have captured this sense of excitement herein.
This much praised and widely used reference manual on has been extensively revised and expanded to cover the entire field of anatomic pathology. The Third Edition features the incorporation of full-color images in the text with updates of new diagnostic and prognostic information. New classifications and numerous new entities and histologic variants are fully explored. Useful immunostaining biomarkers and emerging molecular targets and relevant molecular findings that have emerged from recent genomic studies are incorporated in each chapter.
Written by internationally recognized authorities, the comprehensive, evidence-based practice information is presented in an outline format that is clear and easy to follow. Up-to-date and richly detailed, Essentials of Anatomic Pathology, Third Edition offers both the pathologist-in-training and the practicing pathologist a concise summary of all the critical information needed to recognize, understand and interpret anatomic pathology.

From The Critics
For surgical pathologists in practice or in training, clinicians and researchers set out basic diagnostic criteria and differential diagnoses. The arrangement is intended to facilitate reference during daily practice and to help prepare readers for board or in-service examinations. The first section reviews general pathology from the dimensions of molecular diagnosis, human genetic disorders, microbiology, electron microscopy, forensic pathology, and cytopathology. The other section covers specific organ systems, among them bone marrow, nervous, endocrine, soft tissue, cardiovascular, prostate, small intestine, and liver and biliary. Annotation c. Reviewer: Katie L Dennis, MD(University of Kansas Medical Center)Description: This book condenses the entire field of anatomic pathology into an easy to read outline format. It is divided into two main parts, general pathology and organ systems. Chapters in the general pathology section include information from various ancillary fields as they relate to general anatomic pathology, such as electron microscopy, forensics, microbiology, and molecular pathology. Seven new chapters are added to the organ systems section including transplantation, spleen, and head and neck, among others. Also new to this edition are over 2,000 black-and-white images and illustrations, the color versions of which are included on an accompanying CD-ROM. The previous edition was published in 2002.
Purpose: The purpose is to cover the curriculum of anatomic pathology for a pathology residency training program, and to provide evidence-based practice information in an outline format.
Audience: Although this book is geared mainly toward pathology residents as a study guide, both for daily cases and standardized exams, it can also be useful to practicing pathologists looking to review a certain topic.
Features: All aspects of general pathology are covered in this concise, yet detailed book. Updated information is provided to help with daily sign out of cases, including the most up-to-date tumor staging, grading, and classification guidelines, differential diagnoses, and immunohistochemical profiles. The table and figures are very helpful, and address topics such as differential diagnostic dilemmas, and common cytogenetic abnormalities in tumors. Although this is an anatomic pathology book, essentials from clinical pathology (microbiology, cytogenetics, hematopathology etc.) necessary to diagnose surgical cases are well represented. Particularly nice are chapters on molecular pathology and electron microscopy, which provide concise explanations of both technique and diagnostic usefulness, and can act as a handy study guide for common diagnostic images in electron microscopy. Current subject-specific references for both journals and textbooks are listed for each chapter. Though the color CD contains all graphics and photomicrographs from the book, it would be nice if the captions were included to make it easier to study using the CD-ROM alone.
Assessment: This is an up-to-date handbook containing pertinent information needed to diagnose pathologic conditions. It is meant as a complement to comprehensive texts, and succeeds in achieving the goal of being a very useful study guide for residents. This book would be a handy starting point for pathologists in training to easily find the relevant information and guidelines needed for both daily sign out and studying for standardized exams. The inclusion of new chapters, images, and a color CD-ROM are nice additions to this version.
