Overview

Thrombotic disorders of the circulatory system represent the leading cause of morbidity, motality, and health care expenditure in the United States. Fibrinolytic and Antithrombotic Therapy provides a practical, evidence-based approach to the management of thrombotic disorders for all clinicians involved in the care of patients with these disorders. It provides not only vital conceptual information on fibrinolytic and antithrombotic therapy, but also the means to apply it to everyday decision making and patient care. Focusing on managment guidelines and critical pathways, the text stresses practicality and usability. It will be a valuable resource for the wide range of clinicians involved in the care of patients with these disorders, including cardiologists, emergency physicians, primary care physicians, hematologists, neurologists, intensivists, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

The origins of mammalian blood coagulation can be traced back over 400 million years. Despite its long history, it is only within the past century that this complex and pivotal teleologic system has begun to be understood. Most recently, the intricacies of hemostasis and pahtologic thrombosis have come to light, leading the way toward new, more effective, and safer treatment modalities.

The Second Edition of Fibrinolytic and Antithrombotic Therapy, even more concise and clinically relevant than the First, provides vital, evidence-based information on management of patients with arterial and venous thrombotic disorders. Since the First Edition, the text has been expanded to cover the evolving topics of atherothrombosis, thrombocardiology, hematologic/thrombophilic conditions, and vascular medicine. It includes up-to-date guidelines for antithrombotic and fibrinolytic therapy, and offers concise summaries of current "standards of care." Chapters are dedicated to discussions of patient-specific therapeutics and to the importance of genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics in defining genotype-phenotype relationships, while throughout the book coagulation, inflammation, and vascular medicine are newly examined as elements in an intricatley-linked triad of biochemical and cellular based phenomenology.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

This pocket-sized book is full of integrated insights into hemostasis and vital information on fibrinolytic and antithrombotic therapy. The author writes in easy to understand language and supplements his text with appropriately placed figures, graphs, tables, EKGs, and algorithms tailored to the needs of practicing clinicians, cardiologists, emergency room physicians, hematologists, and nurses. The purpose is to provide vital conceptual information on fibrinolytic and antithrombotic drugs in the management of thrombotic disorders to help physicians in decision-making and patient care. The author very much meets these intended objectives and this book is much needed. The book is written for practicing clinicians and clinicians in training, emergency room physicians, cardiologists, hematologists, and advanced practice nurses. It may also be useful for senior medical students and residents. The author is a recognized expert in this field. Essential information is presented on historical perspectives in hemostasis, vascular biology, arterial and venous thrombogenesis, fibrinolytic management of acute myocardial infarction, coronary angioplasty, new anticoagulant, antithrombotic, fibrinolytic, and antiplatelet drugs. Management of acute myocardial infarction is very well covered with excellent algorithms. The EKGs could have been better reproduced. This pocket-sized book contains comprehensive practical information on fibrinolytic and antithrombotic therapy in easy to understand language. It will be useful not only to practicing physicians, cardiologists, hematologists, emergency room physicians, and advanced practice nurses but also senior medical students and residents. Otheravailable books in the field are voluminous.

From The Critics

Reviewer: Christopher J. White, MD(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This book covers the complex issue of fibrinolytic and antithrombotic therapy in a straightforward and clinically useful way. It approaches the subject by describing the agents and mechanism of action in detail and then the clinical syndromes in which they are used, presenting the information in a way that is self-reinforcing. The first edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: "The purpose is to provide an overview of thrombotic disorders that is broad in intellectual scope including the vessel wall, the coagulation cascade, and the platelet as well as the clinical syndromes in which they are important. "
Audience: The book is germane to anyone who treats thrombotic disorders including internists, emergency physicians, and vascular specialists/cardiologists. It is geared more towards specialists or those with a special interest in these disorders.
Features: The presentation is somewhat redundant in the sense that the book is divided into sections on biology/basic concepts, agents, and clinical syndromes. This format has the benefit of providing reinforcement to the reader who wishes to become more familiar with the subject as well as being convenient for the reader who wishes to answer a specific clinical question. This approach of progressively building complexity while maintaining independence of the parts is particularly useful in this type of dual purpose reference and didactic book.
Assessment: This is an excellent overview for anyone who wishes to develop a broader knowledge of these agents and disorders. It is very well conceived and executed both in content and organization. This second edition also brings us up-to-date as to the clinical relevance of newer concepts (such as inflammatory contribution to acute syndromes) as well as introductions to techniques that have a niche in clinical care now but will probably be more widespread in the future (platelet function/inhibition analysis).
