Purpose: "The purpose is to provide an overview of thrombotic disorders that is broad in intellectual scope including the vessel wall, the coagulation cascade, and the platelet as well as the clinical syndromes in which they are important. "
Audience: The book is germane to anyone who treats thrombotic disorders including internists, emergency physicians, and vascular specialists/cardiologists. It is geared more towards specialists or those with a special interest in these disorders.
Features: The presentation is somewhat redundant in the sense that the book is divided into sections on biology/basic concepts, agents, and clinical syndromes. This format has the benefit of providing reinforcement to the reader who wishes to become more familiar with the subject as well as being convenient for the reader who wishes to answer a specific clinical question. This approach of progressively building complexity while maintaining independence of the parts is particularly useful in this type of dual purpose reference and didactic book.
Assessment: This is an excellent overview for anyone who wishes to develop a broader knowledge of these agents and disorders. It is very well conceived and executed both in content and organization. This second edition also brings us up-to-date as to the clinical relevance of newer concepts (such as inflammatory contribution to acute syndromes) as well as introductions to techniques that have a niche in clinical care now but will probably be more widespread in the future (platelet function/inhibition analysis).
