Overview

Intravascular thrombus formation remains one of the most significant problems in cardiovascular medicine. It underlies the clinical presentation of acute coronary syndromes, including unstable angina and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction.

More and more individuals are stricken with an acute MI and undergo a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Several reasons apply, including an increasingly aged population, the growing burden of chronic risk factors such as diabetes, obesity, sedentary behaviour, and improvements in early recognition and intervention. Thrombus formation also results in substantial morbidity and mortality. Despite significant advances in prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism, pulmonary embolism remains a common preventable cause of hospital deaths. Implementing the most appropriate, and safe, anticoagulation therapy across the spectrum of cardiovascular disease in the presence of a wide range of other risk factors remains a challenge.

Written by leading authorities in the field, Management Strategies in Antithrombotic Therapy offers a comprehensive review of antithrombotic therapy, including the latest therapies, risk factors and evidence-based strategy. The book acquaints readers with the data behind the commonly used antithrombotic agents and assists them in formulating a sound, evidence-based therapeutic strategy appropriate for each patient.

This book is an invaluable resource for all postgraduate students and specialist physicians in cardiovascular medicine, cardiac and vascular surgery, and critical care.

Synopsis

Intravascular thrombus formation remains one of the most significant problems in cardiovascular medicine and a major risk in many interventional procedures. Today, clinicians have a wide choice of antithrombotic and anticoagulant agents available, including aspirin, thienopyridines, platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors, low molecular weight heparins, thrombin inhibitors, and fibrinolytic agents. Though effective, all of these agents possess limitations, the most common being an increased risk of bleeding. Implementing the most appropriate, and safe, anticoagulation therapy across the spectrum of cardiovascular disease, in the presence of a wide range of other risk factors, remains a challenge.

Incorporating the most up to date evidence-based review of each class of agents, this book acquaints readers with the data behind the commonly used anti-thrombotic agents and will assist them in formulating a sound, therapeutic strategy appropriate for each patient.

Reviewer:Bijesh P. Maroo, BS, MS, MD(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description:This resource for physicians who treat patients with intravascular thrombosis, ranging from acute coronary syndromes to venous thrombosis, is divided into chapters that discuss various treatment strategies and current data supporting these therapies.
Purpose:The authors have created a single book dedicated to the field of antithrombotic therapies, offering an algorithmic approach to the treatment of a broad range of patients with these disorders.
Audience:This book will be of interest to medical students and residents, cardiology fellows, and attending physicians involved in the care of patients with thrombotic disease.
Features:The authors discuss the pathophysiology of arterial and venous thrombosis, then the pharmacology and clinical uses of antithrombotic agents. They also include chapters on venous thromboembolic disease and heparin induced thrombocytopenia. Each chapter is well illustrated with schematic diagrams and includes helpful summaries of recent trials. References to available literature end each chapter.
Assessment:This is a well organized, excellent review of treatment strategies for patients with arterial and venous thrombotic disorders.
