Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Luis F. Escobar, MD, MS(St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care Center)
Description: This is a compilation of carefully selected facts for quick review of basic genetic concepts. The 18 chapters provide current genetic information in an itemized conceptual format and include a section of USMLE step 1 type questions. The online access to the full text makes this book extremely attractive.
Purpose: The author recognizes the need for medical students to have a way to concisely and quickly review genetics information in preparation for board examinations, and this book is likely to place the student in a strategic position to review genetics in a reasonable time period. He provides exposure to questions likely to appear on board exams.
Audience: Written particularly for medical students preparing for the USMLE step 1 exam, the material presented here can be used by medical genetics residents and postdoctoral fellows preparing for board certification.
Features: The format of this review is unique. It provides a system of itemized concepts for fast memorization and review. Each section is followed by a group of questions to test the readers' grasp of the information. Answers are provided along with explanations, in order to further reinforce the reader's knowledge. A comprehensive examination with 133 questions that can be used as a simulated test-taking session ends the book. Overall, nearly 300 board-style questions are included.
Assessment: This is a much-needed tool. The author's recognition of the lack of material for medical students, clinical genetics residents, and clinical fellows for preparation for certification exams is unique. His ability to compile and present such a vast amount of information in a very concise manner is wonderful. This unique book is extremely well planned.
