Reviewer:K. P. Ravikrishnan, FRCP (C), FACP FCCP(William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description:The book, "High-Yield Lung" by Ronald W. Dudek is one of a series titled, "High-Yield Systems". The book is targeted for medical students preparing for USMLE Step 1, as well as clinical and pre-clinical teacher, residents and students. The author uses the method incorporating the basic science applied to clinical disorders.
Purpose:Though geared for students in preclinical years, high-yield lung can be used as a quick reference for residents-in-training and will be useful for medical educators. Medical educators can use this book to help students prepare for USMLE Part 1. This book is precise, concise and is well organized and meets all the requirements set forth by the author.
Audience:This book, as the author points out is helpful for medical students preparing for USMLE Step I. Residents in training seeking for," Pearls in clinical medicine" will find this book useful preparing for rounds and morning report. Medical educators helping the students preparing for the test will also find this book very useful.
Features:Integration of illustrations, radiological images and the pathological pictures used in this text is unique and will help to re-enforce the student's gained knowledge and will help the "Recall", which is an essential concept in medical school examinations. Though the author emphasizes the system-based approach to simplify the understanding of the principle elements of an organ system, students will have to develop a strong basic science skill prior to using this book. This book will serve the student who already has good basic skills and will help to organize and manage the information gathered in focused medical education. A complex topic like Thoracic Actinomycosis is well organized in a short and precise manner. The accompanying pictures will re-enforce the student's understanding of this topic and will help to "Recall" the topic in USMLE tests. Diagrams and illustrations used in this book are extremely helpful in simplifying complex topics.
Assessment:This well indexed book makes it easy to refer to the topics after the initial reading. Dr. Dudek uses the system-based approach and covers the curriculum concentrating on respiratory system in this book. This approach goes against the grain of focused curriculum and is well suited for medical school tests. This highly organized text with a good table of contents and index is superb resource for review of the topics in days and precious hours before the test.
