Overview

This updated Second Edition of a book in the popular High-Yield(TM) series intended primarily for USMLE review provides a succinct and well-illustrated review of gross anatomy in an easy-to-follow outline format. This book reviews topics most likely to appear on the USMLE Step 1 exam along with clinical correlation and heavy usage of CT and MRI scans. New to this edition are additional clinical correlations, expansion of the Head and Neck chapters, division of the Vertebral and Spinal Cord into two chapters, addition of summary tables, and replacement of figures no longer used on the USMLE exam. Designed to crystallize review material and key information needed for success on the Boards, this is also a great review book during an anatomy course as well as a refresher prior to the onset of a general surgery rotation.

High-Yield(TM) Gross Anatomy, Third Edition provides the essential information needed for USMLE Step 1 review and course study. It is written from a clinical perspective to prepare students for clinical vignettes on the USMLE and thoroughly illustrated with drawings and radiographic images. This edition includes more radiology and cross-sectional anatomy and features extensive clinical applications, many enhanced with illustrations and photos. New chapters include the lymphatic system, the autonomic nervous system, and the eye.

From The Critics

Reviewer: Teresa A. Dombrowski, PhD(Midwestern University)
Description: This clinical anatomy review book for the NBOME reviews the information in a regional fashion, integrating basic anatomy with relevant clinical material. The previous edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: The author intends this book to be used by second-year medical students reviewing for the gross anatomy portion of the NBOME, Part I. A concise review text of gross anatomy is an asset to students studying for the boards, since most anatomical textbooks tend to be very detailed, making it difficult for students to separate essential from nonessential material. This book is very complete for the most part, and provides a concise review of the basic and clinical anatomy of the different regions of the body.
Audience: The author specifically intends this book for second year medical students preparing for their board exams. Although that subset of students would find this book useful, it would also be a valuable adjunct to any basic gross anatomy course because it presents the clinical applications of the anatomical material. The author is a well-regarded anatomist who has authored a number of textbooks.
Features: The book provides a regional review of basic gross anatomy, integrating pertinent clinical material. Presentation of both the basic anatomy and the clinical material is supported by line drawings and diagnostic images, including x-rays, CT scans and MRIs. The material is presented in a clear, easy-to-follow manner, and each region is covered thoroughly and comprehensively. The supporting illustrations assist in clarifying the material and provide a review of relevant diagnostic images that may appear on the boards. The author uses several summary charts for nerve lesions that provide a quick review of the pertinent structures and symptoms.
Assessment: I found this to be a concise, yet thorough, review of regional clinical anatomy that will be extremely valuable to time-stressed medical students studying for boards. Despite its compactness, the book is extremely readable and interesting.
