Children's Literature

Getting a grip on adverbs is the focus of this book from the series called "Grammar All Stars: The Parts of Speech." This title uses the sports theme of golf to present and reinforce the use of adverbs in everyday language. Sportscaster Buzz Star appears, as he does in each book, with a child sidekick to help with the day's announcing. Alex, a mini golf champ, reports with Buzz in this case. The two incorporate adverbs naturally as they report on this golf tournament. Three short chapters are used to get across the grammar message. Chapter one defines adverbs and chapter two reinforces that adverbs answer the questions of how, when, or where and may describe a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. The final chapter is made up of a narrative finishing up the day's golf event and it shows how adverbs are used. Sidebars are found throughout and offer definitions as well as ideas on usage of the highlighted part of grammar. Bright kid-friendly illustrations enhance the text. Endmatter consists of the rules for using adverbs, an activity where students can look for adverbs, and an answer key. All books in the series will make it fun to learn about grammar.
