Children's Literature

Sportscaster Buzz Star and third grade kid reporter Julio tackle verbs in this easy-to-read book from the "Grammar All Stars: The Parts of Speech" series. They do so while broadcasting the Play Ball Pro-Ball Championship baseball game. Buzz helps Julio understand that many verbs are used to broadcast the action sport of baseball. Julio learns about action verbs, linking verbs, helping verbs, and irregular verbs. He also discovers that verbs can be past or present or future tense. In each chapter, verbs being discussed are set off in boldface to add to the ease of comprehension. The book's user-friendly format consists of three chapters, and rules, and an activity at the end of the book. Answers for the activity are supplied. In addition, sidebars contain the most important facts about verbs. This 32-page book will work well to supplement grammar lessons. All books in the series are based on different sports that kids know about and enjoy. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury

Editorials

Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger

One of six in the "Grammar All-Star" series, designed to reinforce parts of speech at he elementary level, this edition focuses on action verbs, helping verbs, and linking verbs. A baseball game called by sportscaster Buzz and his kid reporter Julio Ramirez is used as an analogy to illustrate the importance of verbs and how they are used, and to interest readers in learning more about this part of speech. Colorful, cartoon-like illustrations, frequent sidebar hints, a follow-up activity, and the lively play-by-play description of the game combine to interest readers. Buzz shows Julio how verbs are an important part of a baseball game, as the two describe the actions of the players. Verbs throughout the text are highlighted to help readers, as the kinds of verbs, the tense of verbs, and the importance of agreement are explained. A follow-up listing of rules, a written activity, and its answer key are included. The book is useful as a follow-up activity to a lesson on verbs, especially for those students having difficulty mastering parts of speech. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
