Synopsis

Grammar comes to life in this unique series that uses entertaining sports narratives to teach language arts skills. Each colorfully illustrated title presents a fictional sports event through the eyes of TV announcer Buzz Star and a sidekick kid reporter. In stories designed to amuse as well as educate, press-box banter introduces amusing players and exciting action, while cleverly incorporating sideline coaching on how to identify and use the parts of speech.

Children's Literature

Defining and using pronouns is reinforced in this lively competition for the High Hoops Trophy. Buzz Star and kid yo-yo champ Jeff Turner give an engaging play-by-play description of the game between the Playmakers and the Hotshots. Jeff explains that he helps a friend learn yo-yo tricks in exchange for help with his pronoun homework and Buzz gets across some important information about pronouns while using them to announce the game. "Hoop Hint" sidebars scattered throughout the book offer definitions and usage tips for specific pronouns. Singular, plural, subject, object, and possessive pronouns are highlighted. Bright, colorful, and sometimes humorous illustrations add to the book's appeal. Endmatter in this book from the series "Grammar All Stars: The Parts of Speech" consists of pronoun rules, a writing activity incorporating pronouns, and the answers to the activity. This is a good supplement to any second through fourth grade language program. It offers many opportunities for "spin off" lessons. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
