Children's Literature

Lewis and Clark are explored in another "First Biography Buddy Book" series title. All of the books in this series follow the same, well-organized format. Each book opens with "Why Is He (She/They) Famous?" followed by one or more short chapters on the subject's youth. This title briefly describes the lives of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The rest of the book covers their expedition west to the Pacific in a straightforward narrative. The text is organized clearly, beginning with a "Why Are They Famous?" section. The type is large and easy to read, with highlighted words defined in a glossary in the back. Illustrations are a mix of maps, archival paintings, photographs and unfortunate flat, workbook-like drawings. Back matter includes important dates, websites and an index. 2001, ABDO, $21.35. Ages 5 to 8. Reviewer: Candice Ransom
