Synopsis
A thirty-foot yacht,
adrift well out to sea,
sends, "MAYDAY! MAYDAY!
Please respond to our plea!"
Hearing this call for help, the United States Coast Guard leaps into action. A team of four highly trained rescue specialists head out in an H-60 Jayhawk helicopter. Battling fierce conditions, the Coast Guard team finally locates the disabled boat, rescues the crew, treats injured passengers, and carries them back to safety.
Complemented by dramatic, striking illustrations, Chris L. Demarest's text brings into vivid focus one of the many important jobs performed by the U.S. Coast Guard. A detailed author's note provides additional information about the search-and-rescue process, making this a terrific book for any school or home library.
Anita Barnes Lowen - Children's Literature
A storm at sea and a boat in trouble! A distress call goes out. Mayday! Mayday! The Coast Guard receives the call and helicopter pilot and crew are ready to lift off to rescue the sailors from a life-threatening situation. A very real and exciting account of just how the rescue is carried out is told in rhyming text (one or two lines per double page spread) and action-packed illustrations. Some of the vocabulary may be a bit challenging for most picture book readers. But any kid who likes the excitement of fire engines and firemen racing to a fire will love this book. A lengthy author's note at the end has more information on the Coast Guard, the roles of the crew in rescue operations and the equipment used. Black and white line drawings of a rescue swimmer, the H-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a flight crew member with all the pieces of equipment and aircraft parts labeled are at the beginning and the end of the book. 2004, Margaret K. McElderry Books/Simon & Schuster, Ages 4 to 7.
