Gr 7 Up-- This second volume of Science Projects , like the first, contains lists of ideas for science fairs or classroom demonstrations. Chapters offer a diverse assortment of projects in physics, astronomy, environmental science, biology, and solar energy. Chemistry, math, and computer science are not included. A project, often no more than a suggestion, may range from something as simple as comparing brown and white eggs, to sophisticated tasks such as measuring the index of refraction of light passing through various liquids. A few projects, like the index of refraction, include designs for equipment (the book's only illustrations). Most projects, however, leave the ``how-to'' up to the reader. Translating Gardner's suggestions into finished projects will demand some thought and effort by the experimenter. A bibliography and list of science supply companies will help, but it's unfortunate that no science periodicals are included. Also, some projects call for adult participation--appropriate for safety considerations, but often the kiss of death in science fairs. Despite these caveats, this is a fine reference book. And not, let's hope, the last of its kind. --Alan Newman, Johns Hopkins University, BaltimoreBook Details
