This comprehensive look at mummies will fascinate any grade-school child studying ancient Egypt. The first chapter gives a step-by-step description of how the Egyptians embalmed, dried and wrapped a body for burial. Readers learn about the destructive action of bacteria and the preservative properties of salt, as well as the lengthy process of wrapping the body in linen coated with pine resin. Kallen's highly descriptive language creates a vivid picture of the discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922, capturing the suspense and awe of the moment. Subsequent chapters reveal how peat bogs and ice can also mummify bodies. Some of the photographs are a bit gruesome, and particularly squeamish readers (and their parents) may be repulsed. A highly detailed index as well as a glossary and list of additional sources follow the text. This book is part of the "Wonders of the World" series. 2003, KidHaven Press/The Gale Group/Thomson Learning,β Barbara Carroll Roberts

Gr 4-6-This book does a fine job of making connections between the modern world and ancient history. Kallen discusses accidental mummification as well as the art and science practiced in different civilizations around the world. He points out that in Egypt, the practice was primarily for wealthy individuals and sacred animals, including crocodiles. Terms such as wabt are defined and the role of priests and the religious nature of mummification are addressed. The mummification process is described in great detail, including the fact that it took 70 days to complete. The "mystery" of King Tut's tomb and the connection to Hollywood movies weakens the serious nature of the book. Full-color photos, some of which are quite dramatic, appear throughout, and the inclusion of accidents of nature, such as bog bodies and the Iceman, increase the book's appeal.-Edith Ching, St. Albans School, Mt.
