Reviewer:Jadranka Popovic, MD(Children's Mercy Hospital)
Description:This is the fourth updated edition of this multiauthored book on decision making in pediatrics that focuses on the diagnosis and management of the most common pediatric and adolescent problems and conditions.
Purpose:As stated by the editors, the book was written with the purpose of assisting readers in the evaluation of common pediatric signs and symptoms and abnormal laboratory findings. The objective is to provide a guide to recognition and understanding and to assist in diagnosing the medical problems of all pediatric patients in an easy-to-use and readable format. This book could be used alone for a more rapid review in a busy clinical setting or as an adjunct to the one of the major textbooks of pediatrics for more comprehensive study.
Audience:This book is written for medical students, house officers, and clinicians. Although pediatricians will probably mainly use it, family practice physicians and others dealing with children might find it very helpful. This book provides adequate information for those needing fast access to common pediatric problems. For more detailed review, readers should consult one of the pediatric textbooks.
Features:The book has 20 chapters that are further divided into the specific topics. Each topic is presented in a short concise way on a maximum of two text pages followed by an algorithm and the list of references. Algorithms greatly enhance the value of this book as they allow fast and easy-to-read review of the problem.
Assessment:This is an extensively rewritten edition of this book and hopefully will be well received. The writing is first class, clear and to the point. The material is presented in an easily readable and searchable format which will be appreciated by busy practitioners or medical students and residents. The only drawback is the fact that algorithms occasionally extend over the two pages which affects the ease of reading. This book has some topics that are usually not adequately covered in other books of similar format, such as international pediatrics. The team effort of the authors provides the pediatric community with a worthwhile contribution to the field.
