School Library Journal

Gr 7 - 10-- A straightforward treatment of an important subject. Nardo begins with a general discussion of the problems brought about by population growth and follows with descriptions of how this increase affects developing countries, developed countries, and the environment. He concludes with strategies and possible solutions. Theories by those economists who do not view population growth as a major world problem are briefly introduced, but not fully explained. The author cites examples in various cities and countries, but his narrative is dry and lacks maps or other illustrative material to clarify the location of these places. The black-and-white illustrations and photographs are numerous, but many are murky and some are unrelated to the text. Although this title may be useful for some report writers, a better choice on the same level is Roy Gallant's The Peopling of Planet Earth (Macmillan, 1990). --Marilyn Long Graham, Jacksonville Public Libraries, FL
