Synopsis
The long rule of Ramesses II of Egypt has become legend. He became pharaoh in his twenties, led Egyptians against the Hittites at the Battle of Kadesh, eventually made peace with that empire, and ushered Egypt into a prosperous age. In RAMESSES II: RULER OF ANCIENT EGYPT, author Don Nardo explores the pages of history to separate the accomplished man from the ancient legend. According to the National Standards for World History as outlined by the National Center for History in the Schools, RAMESSES II satisifes Era 2: Early Civilizations and the Rise of Pastoral Peoples, 4000-1000 BCE (BC).Editorials

Gr 6β9This book has great potential due to its subject matter, but is disappointing in many respects. For one, it's unbalanced; Nardo spends two chapters (out of eight) on the Battle of Kadesh, which is, without doubt, an important event but not worthy of a quarter of the book. The sole map is woefully inadequate and omits countless places referred to in the text. Nardo's footnoting is atrocious, with numerous quotes badly distorted from their sources. Finally, although a whole page is devoted to Ramesses's many names, there is no explanation for the unfamiliar spelling. Jim Whiting's The Life and Times of Rameses the Great (Mitchell Lane, 2005), for the same age, isn't nearly as detailed, but avoids missteps and covers the basics in a far more entertaining manner.
