School Library Journal

Gr 2-4-Beginning with a helpful world map, each of these books provides a short introduction to the history, discovery, development, and uses of its subject. The key to the rice map indicates where the grain was first grown, the direction it traveled, and where it is harvested now; the one for salt shows where the substance has been found; and the spice map indicates the origins of cloves, nutmeg, pepper, and cinnamon, and shows where they spread. The tables of contents do not always reflect the information in the chapters. Some of the black-and-white and color photographs, reproductions, and drawings are helpful and appealing; others are not particularly relevant. Most libraries will not need separate titles on these topics.-Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
