Synopsis

Meet Sam the mouse. Meet Jack the cat. Uh-oh . . . can Sam and Jack be friends?

Children's Literature

Jack the orange tabby cat is quite appealing. The simple text will also appeal to kids just beginning to read. In a few pages, they meet Jack, who is a very happy and charming cat. He lets Sam the mouse know that he is a friend. The third story features Sam, who compares himself in size to Jack, who is much larger, and to a couple of insects, who are much smaller. The pictures are perfect and readers will get plenty of help decoding the text. Part of the "Green Light Reader" series, this is a Level 1 book for grades k-1. There is information about reading readiness on the opening pages which parents will find useful. 2001, Harcourt, $10.95. Ages 5 to 7. Reviewer:Marilyn Courtot
