Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature
As with the other books in the "Months of the Year" series, Brode introduces young readers to some of the characteristics, events and activities in the month of September. First, readers learn that it is the ninth month of the year and that it has 30 days. September is the bridge between summer and the start of fall, but in many areas of the country September can be a very hot month. Fall or autumn begins on the 21st of September. Now the days will get shorter and the nights longer. The leaves may turn color but it really isn't due to the temperature as the text implies, but to the amount of sunlight that the leaves receive. The month of September also hosts another major holiday. The first Monday is known as Labor Day. It honors all the people who work. In many parts of the country, September is the month when school starts. In addition, it is the time when sports such as football and soccer start up again and baseball starts to wind down. The month of September is followed by October and that means autumn is in full swing. Throughout the text, there are pages of full-color photographs showing kids engaged in many of the activities described. A calendar showing the months of the year and the seasons wraps up the text. Some of the pages have rhetorical questions, which, rather than making it interactive, take away from the book. There is a three-word glossary. 2003, Weekly Reader,
