Overview

The problems are mostly treatable, but sleep disorders affect some 40 million Americans and are linked to lost productivity, car accidents, and other health problems. Gathering information from government and relevant agency sources, this consumer reference addresses the biology of sleep, changing sleep needs throughout life, how to improve sleep quality and quantity, the diagnosis and treatment of specific sleep disorders in adults and children, and conditions that affect sleep. The volume includes a glossary, directory of resources, and suggested further reading. Annotation Β©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Steve C. Lee, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book provides basic information on a wide variety of topics related to sleep in an easy to read style.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate readers about sleep, including normal patterns, changes throughout the life cycle, and disorders both common and rare. Understanding sleep and, especially, the consequences of sleep deprivation is of great import in our society. The book is successful in making the claim that sleep deprivation is a debilitating and at times dangerous state. It addresses common sleep myths and emphasizes practical steps in remedying common sleep problems.
Audience: The book is intended to be used as a resource for patients, families, and caregivers. The content is pulled from a variety of sources and a board-certified physician in internal medicine is cited as the book's medical consultant.
Features: The strength of this book lies in its readability. A wide range of topics are discussed at a level of detail sufficient to provide practical points for readers while avoiding potentially undecipherable scientific language more suited for specialists. There is some degree of redundancy between sections, which may reflect overlapping information cited from different sources.
Assessment: This book is quite successful in fulfilling its purpose. This information is sorely needed in our culture. One would hope that a resource such as this would reach a wide audience and stimulate changes in people's sleep habits.
